Educating Our Children: Public Vs. Private
http://www.americanprogress.org/cartoons/2009/08/082009.html
What does this picture attempt to explain to the viewer? How does this cartoon portray the public's opinion on the public schooling system? What is this artist's opinion on the public schooling system? How does this cartoon relate to our class theme of public vs. private?
The School System: Public Vs. Private
The link above will take you to a news article about a high school football game between a catholic private school and a public school. (If you would like to watch the video, you can hear the chants at the 2:40 and 9:15 mark and the coach’s reaction is at the 8:00 mark).
Why is it more acceptable for public schools to have more freedoms, such as their chants, than private schools? Do you think the coach of the public school overreacted or was his response justified? How are each of the schools portrayed in this article? How does this story relate to our class theme of public vs. private?

The cons of airport security scans.
How much of our privacy should we give up in exchange for security? Does this security scan cross the line on privacy? As an initial reaction to 9/11, would these scanners seem like a good idea? How does this artist express his views on airport security scans?
The pros of airport security scans.
The above link directs you to the Transportation Security Administration Website.
Is there a true way to keep airports secure without violating the privacy of people? Would you as a person rather be scanned or be patted down at a security check? Is this more of a safety issue or a privacy issue? Does this article do a good job at convincing you of supporting airport security scans?

Teen Pregnancy PSA
Please view the video above. It is a PSA that was run in Midvale, UT. While viewing the video please take into consideration the feel of the video and the underlying themes that the creators are attempting to convey through the PSA.
1. How does this display of teen pregnancy differ from the teen mother portrayed on the magazine cover? Do you think the creators of this PSA were appealing to a specific demographic, why or why not? How are the setting, music and characters used to grab the attention of their target demographic? How is the male’s role in this PSA portrayed differently than the female’s role? How do their different portrayals affect how we view sexual responsibility? What is this PSA attempting to say about the reality of teen pregnancy?
2. How does this magazine cover relate to our theme Private vs. Public?
Teen Pregnancy In The Media

This is a screen shot of the Teen Mom 2 Facebook page, it displays an old cover of the magazine Ok. The cover portrays former child star, Jamie Lynn Spears joyfully displaying her newborn baby girl. The upbeat cover reading “Being a mother is the best feeling in the world!” seems to be nothing out of the ordinary except that the young woman on the cover was only 16 at the time.
1. What does this cover do to falsely portray teen pregnancy? How does it glamorize the normally difficult and extremely trying time in a young woman’s life? How are the young mother and baby presented? What does the upbeat and colorful tone of the cover lead you to conclude about this young mother? Does this magazine cover truly portray what teen parenthood is like?
2. How does this magazine cover relate to our theme Private vs. Public? (Consider the subject matter and the young woman being displayed, and the money she most likely made to do this cover.)

Media in the Domestic Space

This is one image from a collection of pictures by Jonathan Hobin (see link for larger image and more photos from his collection, "In the Playroom"). In each picture, children act out major "news" stories that have shaped our history (within the last ten years).
1. As you can see, this image has no words in it. And yet, I imagine most of you can figure out what event this image relates to. Why is that? How does the picture (its visual clues and arrangement) convey its message? What themes are predominant in the image? How are each of the characters portrayed? How do their representations shape your understanding of the image? Of the event itself? What might you assume about the photographer's viewpoints based on this image? Is he biased? Or is he commenting on "bias" in media?
2. How does this picture relate to our course theme of "private vs. public?" (consider the setting, the scene and its context regarding "news" in our culture)

2. How does the author attempt to persuade you? Does she succeed? Is the author biased? Provide evidence.
3. How does this relate to our course theme of "private vs. public?" (besides the fact that it relates to Facebook)
