Teen Pregnancy PSA

Please view the video above. It is a PSA that was run in Midvale, UT. While viewing the video please take into consideration the feel of the video and the underlying themes that the creators are attempting to convey through the PSA.

1. How does this display of teen pregnancy differ from the teen mother portrayed on the magazine cover? Do you think the creators of this PSA were appealing to a specific demographic, why or why not? How are the setting, music and characters used to grab the attention of their target demographic? How is the male’s role in this PSA portrayed differently than the female’s role? How do their different portrayals affect how we view sexual responsibility? What is this PSA attempting to say about the reality of teen pregnancy?

2. How does this magazine cover relate to our theme Private vs. Public?

Teen Pregnancy In The Media

This is a screen shot of the Teen Mom 2 Facebook page, it displays an old cover of the magazine Ok. The cover portrays former child star, Jamie Lynn Spears joyfully displaying her newborn baby girl. The upbeat cover reading “Being a mother is the best feeling in the world!” seems to be nothing out of the ordinary except that the young woman on the cover was only 16 at the time.

1. What does this cover do to falsely portray teen pregnancy? How does it glamorize the normally difficult and extremely trying time in a young woman’s life? How are the young mother and baby presented? What does the upbeat and colorful tone of the cover lead you to conclude about this young mother? Does this magazine cover truly portray what teen parenthood is like?

2. How does this magazine cover relate to our theme Private vs. Public? (Consider the subject matter and the young woman being displayed, and the money she most likely made to do this cover.)

Media in the Domestic Space

This is one image from a collection of pictures by Jonathan Hobin (see link for larger image and more photos from his collection, "In the Playroom"). In each picture, children act out major "news" stories that have shaped our history (within the last ten years).

1. As you can see, this image has no words in it. And yet, I imagine most of you can figure out what event this image relates to. Why is that? How does the picture (its visual clues and arrangement) convey its message? What themes are predominant in the image? How are each of the characters portrayed? How do their representations shape your understanding of the image? Of the event itself? What might you assume about the photographer's viewpoints based on this image? Is he biased? Or is he commenting on "bias" in media?

2. How does this picture relate to our course theme of "private vs. public?" (consider the setting, the scene and its context regarding "news" in our culture)
